This blog was created to discuss & share photos & the history of the mighty "Standard Railroad of the World," the Pennsylvania Railroad's (PRR's), Delmarva Division on the Delaware, Maryland & Virginia's Delmarva Peninsula.
The Delmarva Division technically ran from Milepost DM 21
(near Armstrong, DE, north of Middletown, DE) on the Delmarva Secondary
Track/Main Line, south to Cape Charles, VA and Franklin City, VA, but the lines
in the northern portion of Delaware & Maryland are permitted (you couldn't
get to the Delmarva Division without running over those portions - except for
the car float operations between Little Creek & Cape Charles, VA).
The Delmarva Division became part of the PRR's Chesapeake
Division in 1956. The PRR merged with the New York Central (& the New
Haven) in 1968 into the Penn Central Corporation. After an early bankruptcy in
1970, the PC merged with seven other railroads into the Consolidated Rail
Corporation, or Conrail, in 1976. Conrail was split between CSX & Norfolk
Southern in 1999. As of December 2022, the entire Delmarva is now run by a
combination of two separate shortline companies.
All posts will be about the PRR and its predecessor &
subsidiary railroad companies that built and operated on the Eastern Shore from
1800's up to and including today - as long as railroading today stays on topic
regarding railroading on the former PRR lines on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Model railroading and railroadiana items related to the PRR
on the Delmarva are perfectly fine conversations for this group.
